October is just around the corner, and so 2019 is almost at an end. Stan will be pretty happy with itself over how it's performed in 2019, if not in the new subscriber stakes, then at least in the amount of quality content that has now joined the Stan library. Let's take a look at what new quality content is arriving in October.
I'm always on the lookout for new "prestige" television shows, and with Forest Whitaker being the star, 'Godfather of Harlem' definitely has the acting nous to be just that. Set in the '60s, it follows the rise and fall of notorious crime boss Bumpy Johnson (played by Whitaker), and also stars Giancarlo Esposito (Better Call Saul), Australia’s own Lucy Fry (Stan’s Wolf Creek), Vincent D’Onofrio (Law & Order: Criminal Intent), Ilfenesh Hadera (Billions) and Paul Sorvino (Goodfellas). Stream new episodes of this show starting October 1.
Straight from Hulu and airing (is that even a still relevant term for streaming?) on the same day as new episodes arrive in the U.S., teen drama 'Looking For Alaska', based on the best selling novel of the same name, also looks interesting. Created by the people behind 'Gossip Girl' and 'The O.C.', this new series premieres on October 19 with the entire season one available for instant streaming.
Returning shows worth a mention include 'All American' season 2 (October 8) and 'Get Shorty' season 3 (October 7), with new episodes also arriving weekly.
With the school holidays still happening at the start of October, Stan is still committed to keeping the little ones happy with the likes of 'Rango', 'The Rugrats Movie' (and sequels) all coming on the first day of October, and 'Happy Feet Two' coming the next day.
For the slightly bigger kids, sinophobia is taken to its logical conclusion in 'Tomorrow When The War Began' when "Asian Coalition Nations" invade Australia 'Red Dawn' style (the remake of which also feature an Asian antagonist). Otherwise, it's a cracking Australian film - stream it from October 2.
Not for kids really, but 'The Hurt Locker' (October 5) is always good for a re-watch too.
The rest of the highlights are all good ideas for a movie binge marathon.
For example, the Anchorman marathon can occur on October 4 with 'Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy' and 'Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues'.
'The Godfather', 'The Godfather: Part II', 'The Godfather: Part III' can be combined with 'Godfather of Harlem' for a Godfather marathon when the trilogy arrives on October 9.
The Jack Ryan marathon starts on October 24 with 'The Hunt For Red October' and ends with 'Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit' (with 'Patriot Games', 'Clear and Present Danger', and 'The Sum of All Fears' in the middle).
This one is stretching it a little, but an airplane marathon with 'Flight' (October 28) and 'Snakes On A Plane' (October 30)?
And on All Hallows' Eve, there's plenty of options depending on the level of scary you want. Beginners can watch 'The Addams Family', 'The Addams Family Values' (not scary at all), intermediate with 'Sleepy Hollow' (a little scary), and advanced watchers can try 'The Ring' and 'The Ring 2'.
