The last Disney+ update was a little weird in that it covered a very specific time period. This update, however, is the first complete month preview for Disney+, and hopefully, something that will become a regular thing in the future.
With Disney+ releasing movies about 8 months after their theatrical debut, January 2020 minus eight months is May 2019, and that was when the new live-action 'Aladdin' was released. And lo and behold, Aladdin is coming to Disney+ in January, although a specific time hasn't been set by the time the Disney+ PR mailer was sent out.
The reward from Disney's 20th Fox acquisition this month is the complete 'Ice Age' movie series, the first four movies on January 1, and 'Collision Course' in the middle of January. It's almost as if Disney is intent on only visiting the 20th Fox movie vault once a month to pick out a handful of items, and slowly build up the Disney+ library's Fox content store. And the focus is clearly on family content, which Disney has always said the focus for Disney+ will be.
Two new series premieres in January, 'Short Circuit' (17/1), which showcases shorts produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios. 'Diary of a Future President' premieres January 17, and it's about Elena, a 12-year-old Cuban American in middle school who has political aspirations which are eventually realised as the show flashes forward to the future, where Elena is in the middle of her Presidential campaign.
The rest of the new content is mostly continuing series, such as the very profoundly titled 'Forky Asks A Question: What Is Cheese?' on January 3, while the series finale of 'High School Musical: The Musical: The Series' streams on January 10.
